Good Morning!
Today we are beginning CH 3 and CH 4, Multiplication and Division. To warm up, let's practice some facts.

After practice the basic facts, see how good you are at throwing multiplication and division in together for speed math.

In Science, we are going to continue looking at Matter, especially the STATES OF MATTER, solid, liquid and gas. We will be following the recipe for OOBLECK in Science Lab to examine these three states further.

OOBLECK
Measure 1 1/2 cups of cornstarch and put in a pie pan or container If you want a color of Oobleck add the coloring to the water first. Then gradually add approximately 1/2 cup of water to the cornstarch. Stir well (this will take some time). Add small amounts of more water or cornstarch until you get a mixture which 'tears' when you quickly scrape your finger through it AND THEN 'melts' back together again. Oobleck is often referred to as a 'non-Newtonian' substance because it does not behave as Newton's Third Law of Motion states; for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Applying this principle, you would expect Oobleck to 'splash' when you 'smack' it with your hand. (Smacking is the action, splashing is the reaction.) However, when you try this out. Oobleck does not splash, in fact, it becomes a solid substance for a few moments. Why? Scientists explain this as follows. Uncooked corn starch particles are structured in both crystalline and noncrystalline arrangements. When slowly mixed with water, the non crystalline structures of corn starch absorb most of the water. When you smack or stir it rapidly, you increase the temperature and pressure on the mixture which causes more non crystalline structures to form. These new noncrystalline structures absorb more water and the mixture becomes thicker:hence the appearance of a solid. When you discontinue the pressure, the number of noncrystalline structures decrease and water is released, creating the 'soupy' mixture.

This is the letter that was sent home with you regarding the 5th grade Performance Assessment that will begin next week.
November 29, 2005

Dear Guardian,
During the week of December 5-9, 2005 your child will be participating in the first Performance Assessment as required for all fifth grade students. This Performance Assessment will cover the topic “how constructive and destructive forces affect the Earth’s surface.”

Georgia Performance Standard:
S5E1. Students will identify surface features of the Earth caused by constructive and destructive processes.
A) Identify surface features caused by constructive processes.
B) Identify and find examples of surface features caused by destructive processes.
C) Relate the role of technology and human intervention in the control of constructive and destructive processes.

This is a project your child will complete entirely in class under teacher supervision. The project will include a writing component and a graphic/visual aid. Your child may bring in resources (i.e. Internet sites, books or encyclopedias) from home, but ALL writing and project assembly will take place in your child’s Language Arts and Science classrooms. Materials for the Performance Assessment will be provided by SCES.

Your child will be issued a grade on the writing component in Language Arts and a grade on the graphic/visual aid in Science. These grades will be counted as test grades in these areas.

Your child will be receiving information on this project daily so be sure to check with him/her on his/her progress.

Important Information

Dear Parents,

It is that time of year for the DAR Essay Contest. This year’s topic is “Benjamin Franklin – More Than a Revolutionary.” Your child has been given a detailed sheet of the requirements. The essays are due to the local DAR Chapter by Nov. 11. However, so that we can proofread and give your child time for corrections, these essays are due to your child’s homeroom teacher by October 17. Your child has also received training in the resources and research methods, so this should not be a difficult task. Please encourage your child to do his/her best – we would love to have some essay winners!
Due to the two day absence this week, we will be having our Fractions Test, CH. 7, on Tuesday, October 11. (We were supposed to test September 29, but this is not possible.) They will also have their quiz over Reconstruction on October 11 (This quiz should have been given September 30.) The test and the quiz unfortunately have fallen on the same day due to scheduling with our Georgia Southern students, who have been teaching the Reconstruction Unit and the fact that we have to begin CH 5, Measurement in Math. Please encourage your child to review CH. 7, Fractions, in their Math books and their Reconstruction handouts and CH. 7 Lesson 4 in their Social Studies books. They will also have a study guide for the Reconstruction quiz. With a little review each day, your child will be successful on the test and quiz.

We are still working hard on fractions. Today we talked about how to find the LCD, Least Common Denominator, in order to add and subtract fractions. Please encourage your child to review this new concept each night. A great way to practice is to play the LCD game.

Welcome to our blog,
Mrs. Sturdivant's 5th Grade StarsWe have launched into a great school year and we are ready to start blogging! The students will be posting different thoughts on what we are learning about in Math, Science and Social Studies. I will be posting information that will help the students master the new concepts we are studying. We will have our Economics TEST on Friday, September 2. The students have thier vocabulary list to review in order to get ready for the test. We will begin studying the Civil War and Reconstruction after Labor Day. We are still studying fractions, CH 7, in Math. There is a great website, King's On-line Math Activities, that we have been using in class and it would be great for the students to continue using it at home. They love playing Fraction Freenzy and Fresh Baked Fractions!
